Building with our God given talents

October 2, 2017

Ex 31 See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— 4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. 6 Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you:

In this chapter in the book of Exodus we read how God appoints Bezalel, Oholiab and some other workers to build the Tabernacle and the articles in it.  Not only that, He also endows them with all the talents they will need in order to accomplish the task.

Bezalel and his friends were called to express God in their community in a particular way.

In the same way, he has given us a sphere of influence and calls us to express attributes of Him to the world around us.  He endows us with the talents that we need to fulfil our particular commission.  God is not going to build it by himself.  He is building it in us, and he is building it through us.

In Exodus we read that everything Moses needed to get the Israelites to the promised land was there, they had food & water, their clothes did not wear out and neither did their shoes.  They had also been handsomely supplied by the Egyptians on their way out of Egypt, so they were not lacking anything.

What has God has given you for your journey?  And how are you choosing to use these talents and resources? Are you choosing to build His kingdom and express God to the people around you, or are you choosing to build your own?

Ex 36:2 Then Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord had given the ability and who was WILLING to do the work.

So you can see that it is not only a question of having the skill the talent and the resources, it is also a question of willingness.  A willingness to do the things that God has called you too.

King David understood this and we see it when he hands over the kingdom to his son Solomon:

2 Sam 7:8

And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.

King David could have told Solomon anything about ruling the kingdom, but instead of giving him hints and tips about ruling the people, he simply says: son, you need to get to know God and serve him with a willing mind.

When David says 'Know God'  what he really means is: Have personal knowledge of him, be acquainted with, and understand him; appreciate, heed and cherish Him.  That is quite a lot different than just knowing about Him.

During his reign David was a man after God's heart.  He was stirred up to build a house of worship for God.  What is God stirring up in you?  What is he asking you to do?  Are you listening to those promptings of the spirit, or are you quenching his voice and following your own agenda?

Some people are chasing success, but realise this:

If you are following God, success will follow you!

In proverbs it says:  Commit your way to the Lord and all your plans shall succeed.

Surely this is a better way for life.  Find God's plan for your life - look at what he has given you to  build with and start there. Start with what is in your hand and if you find you lack wisdom or resources along the way, just ask for more as God freely gives to those who ask.
