I have found that many christians have this warped idea that wealth is bad and that God wants us to be poor all our lives. Or, that when we prosper, we should give it all away. However, that is not actually the truth. God may well tell you to make money and then give it away, but that is not the first thing that needs to happen. Because, in order for you to give something away, you have to possess it first. Therefore God's first intention for us is that we prosper. Lets have a little look at the scriptures to see what He has to say on the subject:
For the LORD your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule over you.
The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
The bible is littered with stories of the millionaires of their time. Abraham was blessed and rich, so was Jacob, Job, king David, Solomon - to name but a few.
"The question then is not: does God want me to prosper and be wealthy with the things from this earth?
No, the real question is: What is the purpose of me being wealthy in this earth."
Are you called to be the sower of money into the Kingdom, should you fund projects which make the world a better place? You can do this IF you have the resources AND are able to keep the mission your priority. Don't focus on the money as the end goal, but keep your purpose first and foremost.
The world is constantly dangling wealthy sinners in front of our eyes as examples. We, however, need to be careful not to follow their ways. The word of God says that to be a friend of the world is to be at enmity with God.
As we have explored before, it is our source which is important. God is a god of wealth. He owns the whole world and the cattle on a thousand hills. Making people wealthy is God's business and He still does that today.
It is also okay for your to ask the Lord to prosper you - just read the prayer of Jabez. He said: Oh Lord that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory. And the Lord blessed him.
Now lets have a look at another scripture:
2 Pet 1:2
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
Let's start with that phrase: 'Grace and peace be yours in abundance'. Is 'Grace and peace' there when we are stressing about paying the bills? Does grace and peace abound when we are sick, or bound or confused? No!
So lets look to see HOW this grace and peace is able to come to us in abundance.
If you read on, you see that it is all wrapped up in 'the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord'. Now the word knowledge here does not refer to head knowledge. No, it is talking about an intimate experiential knowledge. For example, the bible says: Lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. You can have head knowledge of that, but until you lay hands on the sick and see them recover, you will never really know the truth of that promise. On the other hand, if you do start acting on that command, and you start seeing the sick healed... then you have real knowledge and that knowledge is more than 'I believe this is true in theory'.
"You don't need to believe it to be true, if you know it to be true."
This is what will produce results.
Scripture on to say that 'His divine power has given us all things for life and godliness'.
So what is godliness look like? What it is like to be 'God like'?
A life where there is no lack
A life where there is no sickness
A life where there is no worry
A godly life is not a religious life. It is a life where you are able to experience the things that have been promised to you by God. Now what does that look like in practice?
Lets say for example my daughter phones me late at night, wanting a lift back home, but I am unable to come out. I tell her to take a taxi. She has no money with her, but she knows that because I told her to take the taxi, I will cover the cost when the taxi arrives home. I have told her to step out 'in faith' on the promise that 'I will have it covered'.
Many people can relate to this example, but have a problem accepting the unlimited nature of God and His ability to back you up when he asks you to step out 'in faith' on his promises.
2 Peter 1:8
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
"The knowledge of Jesus Christ is what makes you productive and effective."
I want you to see how the word of God is connected with success and wealth. I want you to look to the right source and connect with Him. He is the source of all things, and learning how to operate the spiritual technologies will make it work for us in our lives.
